I need to remove the trial version of Windows XP and revert back to Windows
98. I can't find directions for this on the MS site. How do I do this?

The easiest way to do this is to re-format your machine.

First back up any data you need to some form of external media (CD, external
drive, USB data stick, floppies etc.).

Second make sure you have all the Win 98 product key and that you have all
Win98 drivers for your machine (motherboard, video, sound etc.).

Next get a Win98 startup floppy disk, if you don't have one get one from
http://www.bootdisk.com.

Place the floppy in the floppy drive and reboot your machine (you may have
to go into the BIOS to change the boot order so that it boots from the FDD).
Once it has booted from the FDD type format c:\ /u .

Once the machine has been formatted place the Win98 disk in the CD drive and
reboot from the floppy drive again. If it is a genuine MS Win98 startup disk
you will be presented with three choices, select the setup option and allow
the Win98 to install. If your floppy is from bootdisk.com you may need to
select the CD drive ( you do this by typing D:\ (where D:\ is the drive
letter of your CD) and then type setup).

Once Win 98 is installed you will probably have to install the various
driver for your machine.

If the machine came with a Win98 recovery CD then follow the manufacturers
instructions.

If all of this is too much for you backup your data, gather up the relevant
CDs and product key and take the machine to a computer technician and get
them to do it for you.
