i recently upgraded to vista and purchased trend micro internet security pro.
their website said i should remove windows vista defender but i do not know
how. i guess my question is (in multiple parts): 1. having upgraded from xp
to vista and removed norton, can i run trendmicro with defender? and if not
how do i remove windows vista defender. also, is there anything else i should
remove/add to run trend micro doing an upgrade from xp to vista home premium?
Thanks,
iceman

You cannot remove WinDefender in Vista because it is intergrated with the
OS. You can disable the WinDefender service in Services though (type
services in the 'start search' box).

thanks for the speedy reply. i origanilly removed the norton teaser that came
with the system and installed mcafee. i ran the upgrade about 6 months ago
with mcafee installed and got nothing but problems. my internet did not work
and the system constantly froze. there were conflicts with mcafee and vista's
security. trend micro's website included windefender in its program list to
remove. yet they also claim to run with vista. do YOU think i can install it
just by disabling it? during the upgrade i was told to remove and disconnect
any devices, like a printer. if i remove the software and leave the product
unplugged, what does it matter if i disconnect the product? along those
lines...do you think i can install trend micro with just disabling
windefender?
thanks,
iceman

Yes, disabling it would do the same as uninstalling it. I did participate
in the TMIS Pro beta but I do not remember having to do this however. Some
AV's disable WD on installation (Norton '07 comes to mind).

On a side note I have switched to McAfee a couple of weeks ago and it is
running smooth on my Ultimate. I was using NIS '08 since I got Vista back
in Feb. last year but found out it was causing USB problems that I had been
blaming on Vista all this time. My auto insurer had a deal with McAfee for
a free subscription to VirusScan Plus 2008 for a year so I installed it.

As I stated I was in the TMISP beta but later after the final came out I
uninstalled it because it was heavy on my system.

Iceman,

I will make the following statement to you based upon my years of
experience with AV products and security suites. Stay away from anything
McAfee, Norton/Symantec, ZoneAlarm and now, sadly, TrendMicro.
These products are all resource hogs that will cause more problems than
they fix. The choice is yours to make. I would suggest AVG and Avast for the
free AV applications or NOD32 for the paid AV. I can't really recommend a
good third party firewall because they all have seemed to go downhill lately,
including Comodo.
Have a nice day.

I cannot understand how an antivirus program told you to uninstall WD in
Vista because you cannot uninstall it in Vista, only on XP.
I like AVG- one it is free, two it does everything the paid "others" do
and as far as a firewall- since Vista gives you the ability to watch ins and
outs why not use it.

I have trendmicro on my vista computer and it runs just fine with Windows
defender
Just set the scans at different times on each program so they do not
conflict with each other
