My computer DESPERATELY needs to be defragged but I'm unable to do so. It always stops when it hits tree.dat file. I've tried running scandisc to repair but it won't run beyond it either. I don't know what this file means, does, belongs to, etc., so I don't know if I can just remove it until I defrag. I tried opening it in notepad to see if I could read it but it just shows up as squares

HELP???!!!!!

I'm runnig XpPro and can not find a file that's called
tree.dat. So it is not an essential file of windows.
Therefore I assume it's a file that's being used by one
of your programs. I would say it is safe to delete and
then defrag your hd. In the worst case you would have to
reinstall your software, but windows should be ok. Also
have you tried other defrag software, such as diskeeper,
which is far better then windows' version...
