transparent icon text

Bob

Hi Group,
Recently, the text under my desktop icons stopped having a transparent
backgroound and took on a colored background. Looks terrible. I've checked
everything I can find in display properties. Any ideas how I can get my
transparency back will be appreciated.

Right-click on your desktop and select:

Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web (tab)
and uncheck "Lock Desktop Items", click OK and APPLY.

Also, check this setting:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:
Properties > Advanced > Performance settings >
Visual Effects, place a check next to "Use Drop Shadows
for Icon Labels on the Desktop", then click "apply".

Open the System applet in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and
click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the "Use drop
shadows for icon labels on the desktop option", and click Ok.

Hi Bob,

Control Panel/System/Advanced tab, click on performance settings. On the
Visual Effects tab, enable the line to "use drop shadows for icon labels on
the desktop".

Are you using some sort of third-party theming application? Try setting
the theme to Windows XP and see what happens. What changed between the
time things were OK and the time they weren't?

I do use a themes program but the problem exists even with the Windows XP
theme enabled. The only theme in which it is not a problem is Windows
Classic.
I appreciate your help.

Transparency only works when there is no web content on the desktop. Display Properties -> 'Desktop' tab -> 'Customize Desktop...' -> 'Web' tab. Make sure that all checkboxes are CLEARED.

Thanks Kieth, that did it.

I just fixed the problem by running the Windows Desktop Cleanup Wizard! It
was just a hunch but it worked. I had tried checking and unchecking drop
shadows. I tried the Web tab. Nothing worked but that did.
