I have the problem discusssed in KB article 818947 where
colors made transparent in a previous version of PPT are
no longer transparent in Office XP version. There is
a 'hot fix' for this, but the path to get more info on
this fix appears to cost money to talk or email a support
person. Why do I want to spend more money on a problem
that wasn't in previous versions!! Does anyone know how
to get the hot fix patch without spending even more
money. Why did I upgrade!!??

thanks,

Actually, if you call MS Product Support as directed in the KB, you
won't be charged for the hotfix. Now, if you start asking the support
tech to fix anything and everything else wrong on your system, they
might charge for the support incident. :-)

Seriously, though. You may have to give a credit card number when you
first dial in (I can't remember for sure), but the tech will waive those
charges once you explain you're calling for the hotfix.

Thanks, Echo. I never had to call before, so didn't know
about fee waiving. I will give it a try. Pretty sad day
when you have to ask nicely to break even! Thanks!

Yeah, it can be a bit off-putting when you first read that you have to
call MS Support to get a fix, especially if you're thinking you'll have
to *pay* for it!

The hotfix KB articles usually say this:
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines
that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support
costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not
qualify for the specific update in question.

And, even though they're not specific, those hotfixes do fall under that
"special cases" thing. (Legalese, you know.) The caveats are there so
that you know that you may be charged if you call to get that hotfix
thinking it will fix a different problem or if you try to tag additional
support issues into the call.

Hotfixes are only available by phone because they haven't been
extensively tested. MS needs to keep track of who has those in case the
hotfix ends up causing more problems than it solves.
