? (Translucent) Selection Rectangle on Desktop

Hi,

The selection rectangle of Windows XP is nice (if you've got a good
enough video card), but it does not seem to work when you selects stuff on
the desktop, only in folders.

Is that by design? Is there a way to get around it and make desktop
selections enable the translucent rectangle?

So I take it there is no way to enable/force it? I mean if it's a
performance issue then it should be up to the user like all the other visual
performance issues. If the system can support it, it would look really
nice.
