Hi All

Could someone tell me what I need to have Installed in order to perform
English to French and French to English translations in MS Word ( Office
2003 SP3 ).

TIA

Cas

Hi Cas,

Translation between English and French is provided by a web service
that's available with the standard Office installation. That means you
need to have an active Internet connection, but everything else should
be set up already. Read the Help topic on translation for
instructions.

Many thanks Jay

I have had a look at the help files associated with translation and I am
performing the steps as directed but IE just goes to
http://office.microsoft.com/marketplace/default.aspx not a translation page.

Now I'm aware that there are many translation services on the web Google,
Bablefish etc but I have a user who needs Eng to French on a stand alone
with no internet access and I thought that word could perform translations
"within itself".

It can translate some single words but seems to struggle with phrases and
paragraphs - I was thinking there was some additional settings ? I seem to
have all the necessary languages installed (Tools>Language>Set Language).

Any other info greatly appreciated.

Hi Cas,

These are my quick observations, but note that I haven't spent a lot of time
investigating this feature.

- After you Alt-click a word or phrase, you have to scroll the Translation
task pane down through a lot of blank space to find the translation it
returned (if any). IE is not visibly involved in this unless you click the
"Get services on Office Marketplace" link, although I suspect it uses IE
components.
- Using the online translation dictionary very often returns "No results
were found". However, if you click the link for Translation Options just
above that, uncheck the "Use online dictionary" option, and search for the
same term again, you get a result.
- The results I get inside Word are rarely as good as the ones from the
Web-based services you mentioned.
