Yes it can but If you do not have the exp needed to do it it will be a long
drwan "smack you head against the wall" basically the HAL in XP is
designed as a safeguard to disallow harware corruption to screw up windows..
what you need to do is tell windows BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE NEW BOARD,,
1. easy way does not always work.. replace old MB driver with new one in
system 32..
2. mosrly works;
Use the recovery console to do this after installing new board.. I mean
there is more detailed instruction, but it would take me a ton of typing to
write it all out..
Basically, find your old MB driver and find your new on (should be on your
MB CDROM install) swap them and it will boot into windows.
NOTE; even doing this you will avoide the repair install, but you could
have allot of issues in windows even when windows looks fine. I recomend
Repair Install;

ASAIK there is no "MB driver" tho there is the Intel chipset inf --can
you name the item you refer to ?

Sorry friend but you've lost me.
I think you mean copy this file from the MB cdrom to my windows folder
prior to installing the board.But the file will likely be part of a
compressed or setup file and cannot be simply copied.

That why I instructed you8 to chose "the make disk option" with the Intel
raid accelerator.
That file will be on the made floppy.
Try going ton intel.com if your cdrom does not have this option. Grab the
raid accelerator 2 version floppy disk maker.. down load it from this page
below;

On the floppy stick the following in your system 32/drivers directory;

then right click on

You MUST reformat the harddrive after changing the OS harddrive in a Windows
system and do a fresh OS install, OR you can look forward ongoing nasty
Registry errors.

will work as well. The registry has little to do with the HAL, Jeez I have
done this at least 20 times before with no real issues to speak of!!

a repair install will keep your program settings. What I like to do is a
fresh install without a drive wipoe. but first I will save my "documents and
settings" folder. that way when i reinstall outlook I wil have all my email
settings in tact but simply copying the old data to the new documents and
settings folder. But repair installs do work. Even the other method, simply
copying the new MB SATA ICH5 files to system 32/drivers will work. HAL was
designed to stop hardware malfunctions corrupting windows, so you get that
blue screen on MB changes its a protection layer against data corruption..
In reality it really is not all great to be honest. But thats windows XP,
and I still like it. Nothing is perfect!!

I found thison a forum:
In the Main bios menu, set the ide to Enhanced - PATA Only. Hit enter on
each of the hard drives, and set the last line on the bios screen for
each to 32 bit mode. On the bios Boot Menu, second line, hit enter, make
sure that the hard drive with the OS is listed as the first HD., then go
to the first line on the Boot Menu and make sure that first is floppy,
second is optical, third is your boot HD.
Advanced bios menu - JumperFree. Set first line to manual, that opens a
new sub menu. You should be able to figure those out quickly. Advanced
Menu, Chipset. Set Configue Ram by SPD to manual, that opens a sub-menu

set MPS to 1.4. Go to Power menu, set suspend to S3 only, ACPI to 2 Yes,
set APM to disabled.
