transferring .pst files

[Frustrated]

I recently had to replace my hard drive and I saved my
pst files to a CD rom. I have placed them on the ne hard
drive into a folder in "My Documents" called "My Mail"
but the old saved folders are not appearing in Outlook.
What do I need to do to recover my old emails folders,
inbox and archive? I have tried to go into outlook to
tell it where to find the folders but this hasn't worked.

You need to ensure the pst is not set as read only, then in OL File/Open the
pst - depends on version for open procedure

Looks to me like you put the .pst file in the wrong place. That's why Outlook can't find it. (It's geared to look in one place and one place only.) Select then right-click the file ("file".pst) in your mydocuments|mymail folder and select "MOVE" (or "CUT) from the menu.

Browse to c:\documents and settings\user (your user stuff generally goes into this directory)\Local Settings\Application Data\ Microsoft\ Outlookand right click anywhere in that directory and select paste. If a copy dialog window says if you want to replace the current file with the older one, select "okay" as that's what you're doing. Once that's done, close Outlook and reboot your computer and restart Outlook. Your old stuff will be there - if you've not made any additional folders. If you have scads of data in sub-folders, you'll need to run SCNPST.EXE to straighten that out to your current .pst file

I am having a similar problem. I had to reinstall the OS (XP Home) and all the software. After installing Office 2002, I copied all the user files in Documents and Settings from the CD backup I had made. Of the 4 user email accounts, only one is seeing the .pst folder and displaying the old emails and address book. My account has a 290 MB pst file, but when I attempt to open it manually, nothing displays in Outlook. It does not have the read-only attribute turned on

Any ideas?

I scanned the .pst files with scanpst.exe, and it reported no problems. It said there are 32 folders and 5845 items in my .pst file, but Outlook can't see a one of 'em.

I was unaware that the files could be listed as read
only. I have been able to get some of the files
reloaded, e.g., my contact files but I have many filed
emails (with attachments) that I desparately need to
access). How do I remove the read only? Also, I have
figure out the import file process but I am getting an
error message when I try to import some of the files.
The message is "the source and destination folders for
this operation cannot be the same." It's a 3M file so I
suspect this is the one I need. It's labelled
Outlook.pst.
Thanks for your earlier message. I'm going to try to
figure out how to get the read only off of the CD rom
files.

Just R click the file and look at its properties. You'll see how to remove
the Read only attribute.
Any file you put on a CD becomes read only, and Outlook requires read/write
access to open a PST file.

Get out of the habit of exporting and importing PST files. That just adds
two unnecessary steps to make mistakes or corrupt data. Just copy PST files
and reuse them by opening them in another installation.

The pst can be placed in any folder on any hd, it can also be named
'anyname'.pst; in OL File/Open/Personal Folders and browse to location. The
exact open procedure/syntax depends on version of OL.
