What is the best way to transfer a number of pictures (about 50) to someone
in another country? E-mail seems like it would take a long time, a few at a
time.

You could try to compress or "zip" them then email them. I'm not sure
how well they will compress, it may depend on the file type that you are
using. Unless you want to upload them to a private area on a web server
and have the other party download them there are few options other than
email. Or use a file sharing program like kazza (yuck!) and open your
computer to all sorts of hackers and what not!

If the photos (files) are very large, as is often the case with digital
photos, use an image viewing/editing program and convert them to
lossless jpegs. Make sure that you do the conversion on copies, not on
the originals. The originals should be kept safe in case you botch
things. You should be able to convert with the software that came with
the camera or with one of these:

Try MegaUpload http://www.megaupload.com/ Just zip of the pictures and
upload them to MegaUpload and send the link to your friend. When your friend
click the link in their e-mail they will be sent to the MegaUploiad site.
They enter the displayed access letters and click Download and in a few
seconds the download will begin. I think the max size of a file is around
250MB

You could burn the pictures to a CD or DVD and mail the disk.

You could also use one of the many websites that allow you to upload pictures to your own private folders. Email a link to the folder and the person could view the pictures and save the pictures in the folder to their hard drive.

Sorry for jumping in here mid-thread. John John, you mentioned "lossless
jpegs." However, jpeg is a lossy format, removing data as it compressess.
Something I'm missing? Thanks, Joe Starin

You're right. It's a term from the old days. What I meant to say is to
chose a compression that maintains visual quality as close to the
original as possible.

Happy,
If you use Instant Message (IM) Programs, such as AOL AIM, YAHOO, MSN, ICQ
Messenger, with that person. Built into the IM programs, there should be a way
of transferring files, between the two of you.
