If you use programs such as EasyCD Creator, you will find this no problem.

In addition to creating a backup on CDs.....
(which is an excellent idea and good insurance)...
you might consider a second hard drive...internal
or external. Then you can drag drop files between
the two drives very easily. Another way to create
a simple backup is to use a USB flash drive.

If you have software like Nero, Roxio, Ulead, etc...
you might try doing your backup on DVDs.
If you have a large collection of image files you
may find that it will require lots of CDs to back
it up.

Here's some info on creating your CD backup:

Tutorial by: Yves Alarie

XP has all the functions to copy files to CDs. No
need to use Roxio and no need to format a CD.

To copy to CD-R or CD-RW, you can't use the
command "Copy to". You have to use the command
"Copy to CD".

1. Insert a CD-R or CD-RW in your drive. Wait 10
seconds or so for XP to recognize it. A box may open,
the Autoplay box. Click on the Cancel button if it opens.
If not, no problem, just continue.

2. Open My Computer, select the folder where your
pictures are and select the pictures you want to copy.

3. Look at the menu on the left of the selected pictures,
under "PictureTasks" and click on Copy to CD.

4. A message will open, bottom right side of your
display "You have files to be copied to CD". Click
on it.

5. A box will open, displaying the files you selected
to copy to the CD. Look at the menu on the left and
click on Copy to CD,

6. A Wizard will open, just follow the directions.
After you copy your pictures to a CD-R or CD-RW,
if you want to add more pictures to it, just insert it in
your drive instead of inseting a blank CD and follow
the same directions.

Just to supplement what John posted, there is ample reason to believe that
data stored on
a hard drive is more likely to be preserved for a very long time than the
same data
stored on CDs or DVDs. I for one have found CDs unreadable after a couple
of years.
I have found CD-RW to die after a very short time. DVDs may be more
reliable, but
I would not bet the farm on that being true.
