Transferring Outlook settings to Vista PC?

N

Nigel Molesworth

I need help to transfer my Outlook 2003 account settings, emails,
folders, and calendar to a Vista PC.

I thought it was going to be easy! I ran the Windows Easy Transfer
Wizard on both PCs, and selected just Outlook 2003. The transfer went
ahead OK, but if I try to import the data I get various errors
depending on the type of data I'm trying to import.

I suspect this is probably a simple task, but I'm making it harder by
almost knowing what I'm doing :)

Any suggestions?

I normally use the export functions in Outlook to backup or transfer outlook
data, such as Accounts, contacts, emails, and rules and then I use the
inport fuction in outlook to restore them or to load them in another PC.

AFAIK, you can't export accounts & rules from Outlook.

Surely there has to be an easier way?

I have exported and inported rules without problem and you are correct about
the accounts I apologize for my error. And I do agree with you that Windows
EASY transfer should do it all.

Copy the 2003 pst file(s) or export the files to the same directory as
Outlook 2007.. then import the pst file from that location.. it works..

How did Outlook 2007 get involved?

I incorrectly assumed that you might have Outlook 2007.. apologies..

Usually, I just copy the entire .PST file, lock, stock and barrel. No
importing or exporting, just copy the file and then point outlook to it.
As for settings, Office 2003 has it's own "Microsoft Office 2003 Save
My Settings Wizard" found in Start\Programs\Microsoft Office/Microsoft
Office Tools. It creates a file that can be imported into another
version of Outlook that has all of the settings. Between that and
copying the PST file, transferring Outlook stuff is easily handled.

Sorry, I didn't make it clear. I don't plan to install Outlook on the
Vista PC. Windows Mail and the new calendar do all I need.

For contacts, messages and account settings the simplest way would be to
import the details into Outlook Express on the old machine, then copy the
Outlook Express Identity to the Vista machine and import to Windows Mail
from that.

For calendar details you need to export the calendar to the iCal format from
Outlook on the old machine as this is the only format Windows Calendar can
import. www.mhsoftware.com/bin/iCalConvert.msi is a beta which worked for
me.

I seem to have the same problem as Nigel (see below).
I have recently upgraded from XP Home to Vista home Premium. It seems that
it might be a good idea to transfer the contacts data from Outlook 2003 to
Vista contacts. I have exported the contacts file from Outlook, but have not
succeeded in importing the same data to Vista Contact.
Can anybody give me a solution to this?
In short: Tansferring contacts from Outlook to Vista Home Premiums Contacts.
Thank you in advance!
Nils

How do I copy the .pst files? In my situation, I will be transferring Office
2003 into an Office 2007 account...please tell me everything that I need to
do as I do not wish to lose contacts or saved e-mails. Thanks in advance!

Just go into Office 2003 Outlook and elect to export your e-mails and your
contacts to a Comma Denomited file and then save those files and then
import ithem into your Office 2007 Outlook
