Transferring Outlook files (and emails) to a different machine?

Since I can't access my Outlook on my laptop, where most of my email is
stored (the master), I'm wondering if I can use a backup of my PST file (I
burned it to a CD), put it on my desktop machine OL, and get access to
emails, calendar etc.

Or do I run the risk of messing up my desktop Outlook. The desktop is the
'slave' and doesn't have current emails that I would like to access now.

I'm working in OL 2000 and XP - both machines.
 
Copy from cd to eg My Documents folder
In Explorer, check properties of this data file and set read only flag off
Start OL, File>Open>Personal Folders.............browse to the pst & open it
 
Since I already have an OUTLOOK folder on the desktop in My Doc's - which
contains the archive .pst and the backup.pst, is there anything else I should
be aware of when copying there?

Am I essentially 'replacing' those .pst files already on my desktop with
the 'new' ones from my laptop ?
 
Store them in a sub folder, do NOT overwrite existing data files
PS If you refer to the My Documents desktop icon this is merely a shortcut
to the actual folder
 
Once they're stored in a subfolder, do I have to differentiate between the
top folder vs subfolder somewhere in Outlook OR does it just augment the
existing (eg mail, contacts, etc.) with this new info? I really appreciate
your help!
 
In OL when you browse to and open this data file it will appear as a second
set of Personal Folders. As such this will contain the usual folders, eg
Inbox, Sent, Conatcts etc
From there its up to you, you can leave this open, or you can *copy* data
from this to your origonal Personal Folders

As long as they have names that differ from the ones there already, you'll
be fine.
