transferring outlook emails,contacts etc

Like a few on here, trying to discover how to transfer my outlook emails and address books etc to outlook on new computer. I seem to have several pst files on old computer. I tried to transfer a backup.pst but the new computer would not accept it. And where in the new computer do we transfer these files to? or do we import? an idiots guide to this would be very helpful indeed. thanks to anyone who can help. Paul PS Can I also transfer all the junk mail settings?
 
What version of Outlook are we talking about here?

You can copy your pst-file to your other computer. Then you can connect to
it by File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...
Make sure the "Read Only" attribute is unchecked
