Hello,

I was wondering if I could possible transfer all the
roles from an existing server to a new server. Our
current server is experiencing problems, before late than
sorry I would like to dcpromo a server as an ADDITIONAL
DOMAIN CONTROLLER FOR EXISTING domain. If so by
transferring all the roles to new server will that avoid
me running around and logging in about 300 computers into
this new server. By transferring 5 roles is that all
needed to successfully make the new server the Primary
Domain Controller.

Thanks

All dc's in win2k are equal (no bdc stuff anymore) but if you move the roles
to the new server, then since it will also have the PDC Emulator role as one
of the five, it will serve as such.
You can transfer gracefully via the gui or via cmd line;

If it should be unavailable (ie, crash etc) and not coming back they can
also be "seized" via;

Thanks alot for your advice. Once I perform all tasks,
Can I demote the old server ?

That is correct. You can use the following article to Transfer the roles.

If you only want that one to be there, then yes. However during a demotion,
a dc goes through a "fsmo give away" in which it transfers whatever fsmo
roles it may hold to another dc. In this case with only two, it would move
all 5 over there automatically anyway, but if you look at the following, you
can move them prior via gui or through cmd prompt;

We are in a similar situation w.r.t. Exchange 5.5. We had a single DC on a
box that was also the Exchange 5.5 box (Needless to say, we are not anxious
to use those consultants again!!) and are in the process of getting rid of
that DC.

We have set up an additional DC server that is intended to function as our
primary DC. My concern in planning for this has been the FSMO's for the old
DC getting migrated to the new DC. Can I assume that the following process
will do this automatically or should we put some more steps in there? I need
a 100% guarantee that when the original DC is gone, that there will be no
impact to the domain or our users....

1) Set up a new DC for the domain. (DONE)
2) Shut down old DC and make sure that logons continue
3) DCPROMO the Exchange server to a member server
4) Set up an additional DC on a backup machine.
5) Shut down primary DC and test logons, etc..
