Recommendations for freeware (if any) to transfer settings and files from an
old (Win 98) to new (Win XP) computer? Or do I have to go the trial
shareware route?

It costs dollars, but it is worth it.
Get a network card installed in your
Win98 system, they are very cheap.
(about $20 in Australia which means
about $10 in the US) Then with a cheap
network cable connect the 2 PC's.
WinXP contains the software to set up
the network. This worked for me.
It won't import your settings, but I'don't
think that anything can do that.

Can you be more specific about which files and settings you are wanting to transfer?

Thanks. "Regular" network cable or some special kind?

One option might be ;

(1) Delete the XP OS and transfer everything from the '98 system.
Forget XP.

(2) Do the first part above but once done use the XP install in
"upgrade" mode.

Ewww, never a good idea..... tis always best to do a clean install (especially when going from a 9x based system to an NT based system as your left with a ton of cr_p from the old OS otherwise).....

Best way to upgrade IMHO;

1. Backup files you want to keep
2. Format/FDisk
3. Install operating system
4. Restore backed up files

If you already have XP, a very cheap and effective solution, tested
many times, is the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard located on the
disc. Just pop the disc in and if you have autorun enabled, it will
show on the list. If not, open a windows explorer and double-click on
the setup file. This copies everything you might want to another
location. If you have enough HD space, copy it there and burn to a CD.
If not, create an ad hoc network and copy from the old PC to the new.
Just make sure you save it logged in as the user profile you want to
copy everything from and log in as the user you want everything copied
to. Fast and simple. Good luck.
