I'm having a problem transferring files from an older
Windows 2000 computer to my new Windows XP laptop. I
connected a crossover cable between the two computers,
assigned ip addresses and subnet. The computers will not
recognize each other.

Any suggestions?

- What are your IP details?
- Can you ping one PC from the other?
- What speed & duplex settings did you use?
- What exactly do you mean with "will not recognise each other"?

When I did a crossover connection from my Win98 to the
Win2k machine, it wouldn't work until I installed the
NetBEUI protocol into the Win2k machine.

NetBEUI is not automatically installed with the OS in Win2k.
Do the install from the
Local Area Connection
property page.

Crossover cables work very nicely with TCP/IP - in fact
the protocol does not matter at all since it belongs to
a different layer altogether. It's like saying "My telephone
worked once I spoke Spanish instead of English". If
your cable did not work with TCP/IP then TCP/IP was
incorrectly configured.
