My new computer came with Windows XP. A friend installed
it, as I am a novice just learning the basics. He
neglected to transfer my files and documents from my old
computer which had Windows 98 Updated Version. He is
unable to come back any time soon, and I am trying to
find out how to do it myself. I have valuable
information stored there and need to access it. Can you
instruct me on how to do this?

Does the old computer have a CD burner? Come to think of it, does the
/new/ computer have one? You could temporarly install it in the old
box and burn your files to CDs.

Likewise, you could just move the harddrive from the old computer to
the new one and run it as additional drive there.

Or, if both computers have network cables, you could use a cross-over
network cable and create a direct connection between both computers.

There's also the option of connecting the old computer to the 'Net,
transferring the documents and files to a free online storage space,
like http://www.coolgoose.com or www.x-mail.net or maybe even
www.yahoo.com. (Put them all into one folder and zip or rar it, so
you'll have to move only one file).

Maybe you have an external tapedrive somewhere to connect to the
parallel (i.e. printer port) of your computers? You could backup all
your files to tape and restore them to the new computer. (Doesn't
alway work in cases of 98 -> XP).

Ha! Better yet, I keep forgetting the newest technology. Assuming both
computers have USB ports, you could buy one of those memory sticks and
move your files that way.
This one is nice:

Wristwatch and 128 MB memory, USB interface, $78.95.

Disclamer: product is shown for info purposes only, this is not an
endorsement of this particular product. Check your local computer
store for "USB memory sticks".
