I have several files that I copy off of my hard disk to a
CD-RW disk, so that I can work with the file at work, a
lap top. The laptop reads the cd-RW, but all the files
are "read only". This doesn't allow me to work with the
files on the lap top, because in read-only I can't save
the changes??

Use File/Save As and then save them to the computer you are working on.
Most likely you cannot re-save to the CD anyway so it shouldn't be an issue.

Hi Robert,
As an alternative to selecting all of the cells and removing the
read-only attribute, you can select any directory level entry
and remove the read-only bit and all files under that directory
will be affected.

If you use the DOS XCOPY then the read-only attribute
will not be turned on in the first place. Most software will
set the Read-Only attribute to Read-Only when copying or
backing up to a CD-R, as opposed to a CD-RW

The files are probably read-only because your work laptop is not a CD
burner, and therefore treats your CD-RW as a CD-R. As this is the case, the
files behave as they would have being copied off a CD-R, where the read-only
attribute is retained. [clipped]
