Hello. Our family is currently using a Gateway desktop computer
running Windows 98 First Edition. Later in the year, we may get another
desktop computer, this one running Windows XP Home Edition.

Presently, I am using IE 5.5 SP2 and Outlook Express 5.5 SP2. I will
want to transfer the IE favorite places and OE address book to the new
computer when it arrives. I know how to save those files onto a floppy
diskette. My question is whether there will be any trouble with the
transfer since Windows XP Home is a different operating system and uses a
different web browser?

For IE's Favorites see File | Import and Export in IE.

For OE see Backup and Restore at this site:

No problem. On the favorite places, go to C:\windows\favorites and copy
some or all of the contents/shortcuts to a floppy. You may notice that some
files might not copy. Just skip over them and make note so that you can
manually add them later

For OE there are several things to do to transfer to another system. (this
is what I do for clients so that everything get transfered that is under my
documents.) First, make a directory under My Documents called Email. Then
open OE and go under Tools>Options>Maintenance. Select Store Folder then
Change. Navigate to your newly created directory C:\My Documents\Email and
select OK. You'll notice a message to restart OE. Go ahead. Next select
Tools>Accounts and highlight your email account and export to C:\My
Documents\Email noting that sometimes this does not work on the new PC.
Next File>Export>Address Book>Comma separated>Export go to C:\My
Documents\Email and make a name. You most likely will not be able to copy
the email onto a floppy as they will be too big. You'll have to find
another way like WinZip a couple of file at a time.

A quick lesson terminology. There is a difference between backing up and
copying. I personally don't like backing up on PC's because there too much
diffference between OS's and the types of backups. There is no real
advantage today due to high capacity CD's and the like. Copying may be used
on all systems. Backup's were good when trying to transfer files larger
than the medium.

Anyhow, on the XP when trying to recover your email, copy your email folder
contents anywhere but most likely to C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Email (create folder).
Start OE but don't create a user. Do the same in reverse; store folder
change, import user account, and import address book (comma delimited).

For the Favorites, copy the files to C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Favorites.

Good Luck

I almost forgot, by default OE6 does not allow for opening attachments. Go
to the security tab and uncheck to allow attachments opening.

Thanks for all that info, John. Appreciate it.
