transferring data when only DOS works

My friend has a Compaq laptop, pentium 4, 2.4, 40gb, etc. running XP home.
Thing is, he did something to it and now whenever he starts it, the computer
stops just before the XP login. Nothing seems to work, I tried all the safe
mode types, running windows under previous settings, etc. Now my question
is, that how can he transfer the data he has out of there. He has a CD
burner, but how will it work outside widnows.

DOS works at least, by booting the system. How can I help him? I mean the
USB won't be detected, right? I was thinking if all else fails I would
install windows 98 in his machine, and then transfer all the files from
there and then format it. Will this work?

Can anyone tell me of any other way in which the data can be transferred.

Thanks

You could always pull the hard disk out and plug it in as a second
(slave) disk on another working machine and use that to copy off the files.

Can you boot with an XP Install CDROM.

If the HD is formatted in NTFS you won't see anything in DOS.

Hi,

Your friend could reinstall WinXP. It would wipe the current settings and
all programs would have to be reinstalled. However, the data would still be
there. If going this route just make sure that the Bios is set to boot from
a CD-ROM.
Also tell your friend not to delete the partition that WinXP is on, but
install a fresh copy over the present one.

Download and burn Knoppix to CD. Boot the system from the CD (won't affect
the hard drives or write to them if you have enough ram). Knoppix will generally
load it's own drivers for everything in the system. It has integrated CD
burner software so you can copy off everything you want to save.

So yes, he can burn CDs outside of Windose and yes he can run USB stuff and
yes he can pull his data off the NTFS drives.

It will read the data, and burn the data, but the next Knoppix version is supposed
to also Write to NTFS drives which will make it truly useful for fixing Windoze
installations that have gone south.

Knoppix is a free 700meg CD image download.

That is a great suggestion! Knoppix goes with me in my "Doctor's Bag" when I
go on house calls. Hasn't let me down yet, and I am not a linux guru at all.

Yeah, I like how it boots up, finds my chipset, onboard sound, overclocked P4, onboard
gigabit NIC, 8 SCSI drives, and everything else in the system, and loads it's own
drivers. I don't have to touch a key to get a fully functional desktop.
It'll let me surf the web, download files and burn them to CD play games, all without
configuring anything at all. I likes it!
