Just bought a new laptop with xp home I now have desktop with xp pro I would
like to transfer some data from old to new is there an easy way to do this
thanks

If you can put both computers on your LAN, then you can use file sharing to
easily see the files on one computer over the network on the other computer.

Do you have any more info on how I would do this I have home high speed
cable with single modem one output going from external modem to my desktop.
Is there an easy painless way to do this thanks

If you have just those 2 computers all you need is a CAT5 crossover cable
(usually a yellow coloured one)

set up the connection using the network setup wizard

Richard,

You connect the crossover cable to the network cards on the computers.
The outlets look like large telephone jacks. This is, of course,
assuming that both computers have networking installed (most new ones
do).

Please don't post in all caps. Its considered shouting, and is hard
to read.

Richard,

If I read your post correctly, I assume that you have the capacity to easily
hook up ONE computer onto the network at a time. If that is the case, then
you can consider using the method that Mr. Ashley suggested. Unless one of
your computers have TWO network interfaces, you'll need to take both
computers off the network because that CAT5 cable needs to be connected to
the same connection (the RJ45 "large telephone jack" outlet) on your
computer that acts as the network interface. (You know which it is because
it is probably the one that connects your computer to your cable modem.)

Alternatively, you can consider more conventional methods of file transfer,
like with a floppy, ZIP, CD or backup tape -- whichever you have that is
appropriate for your systems.

If you do have the ability to put BOTH computers on the network
simultaneously, then you can go to the folder on OLD_COMPUTER and share that
folder. To do that, look on the left where it says "share this folder" (or
something like that). Then, after that's done, go to NEW_COMPUTER and look
at your "My Network Places". From there, you should be able to see what you
shared from OLD_COMPUTER. Then, a simple "copy to folder" operation is
available to you.

HTH,

Steve
