A previous post explained how to transfer from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2000
by using File, New, Data file.

However Outlook 2000 does not have this facility. Is there any way I can do
it? I imported a backup .pst file. The Contacts are there in the destination
PC, but using the To button on creating an email does not display them for
selection.

Thanks

Andrew

You failed to give an accurate account of your version.

To use another PST file (such as one from an earlier installation) and set
it to be the default for your current installation of Outlook, you will
first need to know the location and name of the PST file you'd like to use
as your new default. Then use the following directions, depending on your
mode of Outlook 2000:

Corporate Mode: (With Outlook closed)
- Control Panel > Mail applet
- Remove the current Personal Folder service
- Readd the service, directing it to the new PST file location
- Restart Outlook

Internet Mail Only mode:
- File menu > Open > Personal Folders file > migrate to the new PST file
location to open it
- Right-click on the root of the new set of folders in the folder pane (View
Folder List)
- Choose Properties
- Check the "Deliver POP mail" box
- Quit & restart Outlook
- Now you can Close the PST file that you were previously using (R-click on
that pst folder while in Folder View and select "Close <foldername>
Folders"). If you have any information in your former PST that you'd like to
transfer to your new default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the
other before you close the old one.

Hi Russ

Sorry, I realised I was not specific enough.

I have two laptops, not networked. Laptop A (W98) is having to be rebuilt so
I needed to transfer all my Outlook 2000 data to Outlook 2000 in a new XP
account on laptop B. The only way I could see to do it was to import to
laptop B an Outlook backup made on A.

This gave me two sets of folders in Outlook on B. The original set and the
imported set. I managed to remove the duplication by moving the folder
structure of the imported Inbox into original folder, also with the contacts
etc.

The contacts folder contains both contacts and a lot of subfolders. By
clicking on each folder I can see the contacts within them. However when I
create a new message, clicking on the To button shows me only the contacts in
the top level folder; it does not display the subfolders. Hence i cannot do
multiple mailings to the content of a subfolder.

And the solution that i have just discovered, is to go to the Properties of
each folder , select the "Outlook Address Book" tab, and check "show this
folder as an email address book".

cheers

Andrew

Importing is never the correct way to transfer an entire PST file. You must
use one of the methods I posted. Fortunately, in older versions, importing
only corrupts some settings, which you have managed to repair. In Outlook
2003 it corrupts the entire profile.
