Hello All;

I bought a new computer a few months ago running W XP , and I wonder how to
transfer some old stuff from the old comp to the new. E.g.., all the letters
in the old Outlook Express and W 98. I cold presumably copy the old stuff on
a flash drive and do the transfer that way. I wonder though whether the old
stuff would wipe out all the new stuff I already accumulated on the new
comp.

Also, I have an old chess SW, for W95, would it create any problems if I
tried to install it on the new machine, W XP?

Would appreciate some comments/help, thanks,

Emry

How to back up and to restore Outlook Express data
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670/en-us

As long as the folders names in Outlook Express do not match (are the same
as) the folder names on your newer PC you should not have any problems, if
one or two have the same name the rename it on the old PC before you export.

You may want to backup OE on the new PC to another folder before you start
just in case.

You can drag & drop emails in and out of Outlook Express into an Explorer
folder - you might find that the easiest way. It's not a good idea to use OE
to archive your old emails anyway - the program can get clogged up and even
refuse to work if you've too many.

The W95 program is unlikely to cause problems *per se*, but it might just
refuse to work. Maybe you'll need compatibility mode?

I used - and still use - a neat little Verbatim 1GB Flash Drive to transfer
stuff from my ten-year-old Dell antique to my new HP Media Centre PC.

I still need to use this because the old PC is still online via a MODEM and
I'm not getting Broadband and putting the new one online until I can get the
whole lot into the other room where the cable TV cable which also carries
the Broadband comes in from the street.

I use a short USB extension lead from Maplin to plug the Flash Drive in to
the old PC so that I don't have to fiddle around at the back every time and
the HP one has a couple of USB sockets under a flap at the front, so it's
very easy to do, the only snag being that it's a bit slow uploading stuff to
it from the old PC because it only has USB1.

This is the drive I bought:

When I bought this and remarked about its size and that it comes with a
neck-strap, the girl at the pick-up point said that she and her friends who
don't have their own PCs yet use these to store their private info such as
personal stuff on boyfriends etc. to keep it away from the prying eyes of
their parents, and then when they visit each other they take the drives
along to compare notes and swap stuff. Crafty! ;o)

As far as compatibility of software, file formats etc. are concerned, the
only trouble I had was with Office 97 Pro not working with XP when installed
as a whole, but fortunately, Access 97 worked fine when installed
separately, and the new PC has M$ Works already installed which more-or-less
provides the rest, and an old version of Poser failed, reporting
insufficient memory.

Odd, because it worked OK with Win98 and 64MB RAM on the old PC, but didn't
like the whole 1GB on the new one.

Hope this helps.
