I have a laptop running 98SE with a lot of data on it. I would like to
transfer the files to my XP desktop computer. I don't have a burner on
the laptop so copying to a CD is not an option. Any thoughts on how I
can do this with as little pain as possible?
Thanx for any suggestions.

Can you connect both machines to the network and map a
drive from one machine to the other?

You will have to find a way to connect the two computers.
You can use a peer-to-peer network or software such as
Laplink. Cost depends on whether you already have network
cards on both machines.

An external CD burner may not cost as much as you think,
so that's also a possibilty.

Do you have any Tech Support from your laptop vendor? If
so, call them for help.

If you have a network, you can simply share files between PCs. If no
network, then use a program like pcAnywhere and join your two PCs together
with the special, null-modem cable that comes with the purchase of
pcAnywhere.

Do you a network card in your PC and Laptop?

Transfering files using a network is very fast and easy.

If you do not have a network card in your laptop then you should get a USB
network adaptor.

These adaptor are not expensive (<$20 on ebay) and allow you add your laptop
to network.

You can move the USB adaptor to different computers that have a USB port.
