I have just purchased a new computer with XP and wish to transfer my data from the Windows 98 (old computer). XP does not seen to recognise 98, or maybe I am doing something wrong.

Your help would be appreciated.

Regards

Then there's no 98 involved for it to recognize. There's just
*data* on the CD.

What kinds of files are these? Please be specific. What program
created them? What is their extension (the last three characters
of the file name, after the dot)?

What happens, exactly, when you try to open the files on the CD?
Again, please be very specific. If you get an error message,
please quote it verbatim.

I can't be sure until I see the answers to the questions above,
but my guess is that you created the data files in a program you
had installed on your Windows 98 machine, but don't have
installed on your Windows XP machine.

Or if you used the Windows backup program, let me point out that
the Windows 98 version of it is not compatible with the XP
version.

You are correct, I have been able to load them onto the new computer but
it doesnt recognise them, maybe I have not opened them correctly.

So should I reinstall the program on the new computer and then download?

I also have a number of Word documents that I want to transfer as well.Regards

Ok I'll get back to you

Here we go:

I have created "data" files within a program file, the program name is
MYOB (Mind Your Own Business)

It loads onto the CD from my old computer (W 98) without a problem.

Downloads to the new computer (XP) without a problem in My Documents.

When I attempt to open a file a message shows:
"You are attempting to open a file of type (.DAT)
These files are used by the operating system and by various programs.
Editing or modifying them could damage your system. If you still want to
open, Click Open With.
After clicking "Open With" a new message shows:
"Windows cannot open this file: My Documents .........DAT
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program crreated it.
Windows can go online and look it up automatically or you can manually
select from a list of programs on your computer (obviously the program that
created these files is not on my new computer yet). What do you want to do?
Use the web to find the appropriate program
Select a program from the list

I tried Works and the following message showed:
"Works cannot open C:\Documents & Settings etc ..........DAT
The file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters or
the file may be corrupt.

Microsoft Works certainly can't open a file created by MYOB. They
are entirely different formats, and the two programs don't even
come from the same vendor. It would appear that you don't have
MYOB installed on your new computer.

This has nothing to do with the difference between Windows 98 and
Windows XP. You can't open the files created by *any* application
unless you install that application (or sometimes there's a
compatible program that will work) on the new computer.
