Does XP Home offer a facility to create a DVD data disk for storage of
selected files? Or do I have to download something extra?

Thanks in anticipation

First, XP does not let you write to most DVD media disk (not sure on
DVD-RAM.) If you purchase a DVD writer drive, you usually get a
bundled DVD "authoring" software which will give you the possibility
of writing to all DVD medias.

Note: It is generally accepted to not consider using the drive
"packet writing" software such as Roxio's Drag to Disk or Nero's
InCD.

Why do you say that, I use a freeware packet writing software and like
it.......just wondering?

The only DVD media that XP supports for writing out of the box is DVD-RAM
(though not all drives support it). For all other DVD formats, you have to
install a third party writing utility. Although there are many such
utilities available for money (Roxio, Nero, Power2Go etc.), a bit of
googling may turn up what you require without any money being required to
change hands.

Many may recommend their personal favourite, but check what it does and make
sure it is what you want.

Thanks for the comments. I use backup, but to an external hard drive rather
than a DVD: my problem was writing to a DVD. So I have found a third-party
freeware program (AVS4YOU) which does the trick.
