i had an old program running under win 98. i changed to xp but i put the
program in the exact location(c:\program files) and a shortcut as required
in the startup group of startmenu. i got the registry settings for that
program from win98 registry (before i formatted c: and loade xp) by
searching for the program entries in regedit and exporting all those keys to
a different drive.
i copied the entire c: of win98 (with all those installed programs and files
of win98 and installed third party programs onto a different drive and then
formatted the c: and loaded xp.
after i installed xp , i merged those entries into the new (xp) registry and
the program worked beautifully
unfortunately i was a victim of sobig last week and it caused some damage
to files due to the inefficient muddling of my niece and i had to reformat
C: and reload xp.
now the program no longer works , obviously. i had deleted the exported reg
keys .i still have the old win 98 registry on my g: drive. ( i verified that
i have G:\SlnC\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP\rb000.cab , rb001.cab, rb002.cab,rb003.cab
and the crased rbbad.cab on my hard disk.)
how can i get all those registry entries back? and get my favorite program
up and running.
ps: obviously, that program is no longer in use now , no updates, no website
and the author untraceable. so that path to use is out of question.
thanks

The registry structure is different in WinXP than Win98. Different files
are sometimes needed for the program to run. VXD files are not used by XP
for example. Since getting an update of the program for XP is not possible,
you may want to consider a dual boot solution so that the program can still
be used.

that involves installing win 98 and repairing boot files isn't it? well if
there are no other ideas coming up i shall go that route. thanks to doug
knox i have the instructions for that route.
but last time i merged the .reg entries the program worked well. so , i was
wondering if we can read the registry to get those .reg files. (all the
entries pertaining to my prog.)
thanks for the idea.

Perhaps last time you exported the relative keys as REG files instead of
CAB files?

No aplogy necessary. I hope you are able to get things setup in a way that
you can use your program. Good luck :)

i went to another computer with win 98-- walked my hdd to that and setup
mine as slave. copied the rb005.cab into the sysbkup in that computer--did a
scanereg /restore to that cab --had a few errors as basically the file was
from a different configuration and with different software-- finally landed
in safe mode-- ran regedit- exported my 4 entries as reg files copied to my
hdd-- shut down -removed my hdd-restored the other system to its
original --got back to my system and hope to find the time to merge the reg
files today. it should work as it worked last time and everything was fine
till the virus attack.
sorry if i bored you with all this but what a lot of trouble.
