Hi,

I have a new computer and want to use the programs (like office) installed on a hard disk that I recovered from an older PC.
The new PC has windows XP installed on drive C: (the old drive also)
When I want to start my old office programs on drive D: I get errors.
I suppose I have to 'transfer'/register by some means the programs on drive D: (how??) or do I have to re-install all of it?

Thanks,

Eric

Thats a problem even though XCOPY in xp will transfer all data, one hd
to another, the fact its a new computer, motherboard, bios, etc.the hd should be
formated and installed per computer. Why not just reinstall certain programs, one
utility will work in this case, file transfer wizard.Set old computer as old, transfer
data to a folder that you create, when thru transfer to a cd.System file settings and
all youre data gets transfered.

The only way programs will work is if you install them.

May be true for some windows programs
usually not true for many of my older DOS programs.
I have over 200 dos programs i moved successfully.

I have moved ACDsee, Forte Agent and several other windows programs
succesfully.

tho some will not move.
I look at the instal log.... If stuff is moved to other that the
install directory I select, I copy the stuff to the same palce on the
new disk. About 85% effective.

SOmetimes I change the registry entries, if listed in the logfile.

The logfile is often used in the uninstall process.

hey Andrew, most old computers don't have a cd burner and the new computers seldom come with floppy drives, so using XP file transfer program doesn't work. (Wake up Microsoft). I'm in the same situation. Luckily I have an external Flash Card reader and USB ports on both computers. or you can buy an external 3.5 floppy on Ebay and transfer that way.

Sorry Eric, but I know of no easier way. and D.C. may be right. You can transfer files, but programs are a different matter. There should be a way to mount your old drive and run it as a slave and access it. Maybe it has to have a different name. 'D' is usually the CDRom.
