I bought a new computer with XP Home, my old one is
Windows 98. Both have ethernet cards, and I have a cross
cable. I understand programs and files can be
transferred through a direct connection. I tried the XP
files and settings transfer wizard, but there is nothing
about a direct ethernet connection, only through a serial
cable.
Sorry for asking a question that has probably been asked
many times, but I am afraid of messing up my computers
and am technically inept at anything more complex than
sending e-mail.
Thank you for your help,
Kevin Sawatzky

Hi,

Use the Hyperterminal in Windows XP to connect through
the modem and then transfer the files. follow the
instuctions when the hyperterminal wizard starts up.

Hyperterminal is found in start | All Programs |
Accessories | Communications

Thank you for the advice, but my new machine doesn't have
a floppy drive. Can I write this to a CD? Or can I use
the original XP CD in the old computer and choose "home
or small office network?

The standard Windows XP CD contains the FAST Wizard. Insert the CD in
the Windows 98 computer, then click "Perform additional tasks" and
"Transfer files and settings".
