Transfer of XP to new Drive

I have a laptop with a 40Gb hard drive that is running out of space. I
just purchased a 120Gb drive and a external USB 2.5" enclosure to aid
in transfering of the data. In the past (windows 98, ME and desktop
XP) I have been ablke to use the command XCOPY with /c/h/e/k/r after
the drive letters. This allows all the data including running system
files to be transferd. Then running FDISK you make the primary
partition active. Needless to say on a laptop you do not have this
option. I have many programs that took months to configure and install
and some that are propritory and difficult to reinstall. The question
is..
is there a way to transfer all data (mirror) the 40Gb drive to the
120Gb and getting the 120Gb to boot correctly with all my original
configurations and icon structures?

I tried using the Xcopy c: e: /c/h/e/k/r and then connecting the new
120Gb but I get a message that "WINDOWS COULD NOT STAT BECAUSE OF A
COMPUTER DISK HARDWARE CONFIGURATION PROBLEM" which I was somewhat
able to fix but now my icons and programs are not all there including
the main system settings. But that was after having to Reinstall XP
onto the 120Gb and then running the XCOPY Command.

Any information that you can provide me with is greatly appreciated.

As you discovered, it is not so simple with XP. Are you using the NTF
file system (highly recommended) or FAT32? Your partial success woul
seem to imply that you are using FAT32.

In any case, you should use one of the many available clonin
applications to copy the drive. But, how have you managed to do this s
far? Can you connect both drives at the same time?

I'd suggest one of the first two.

There is a simple adapter available that would allow you to connect
laptop drive to a desktop. You could then use that to perform th
cloning operation

Use a third-party utility such as Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost.
 
Files should be a simple matter..You COPY them to a CD/DVD Disk..the UDF File
System for Disk should aid the re-application to a New PC-system..as for your
Software programs(XP-logo)should be your guide there..also Windows does NOT
work well OVER 120-GB's..as a System[C:]HD..be careful..I really don't
understand you Hard-line difficulty.

I am currently using an 80GB Maxtor ATA drive on my Windows XP Pro system.
I purchased a couple of Samsung SP2504C 250GB SATA drives (one for RAID
mirroring) to replace the ATA. I successfully convinced BIOS, RAID, and
Windows to recognize the new drives after some effort. (I did have to use
the 150 jumper on the drives.)

Using Acronis, I copied all three partitions to the primary SATA drive and
all seemed to go well. (Acronis did this in the pre-OS boot stage.) I
powered down, removed the ATA drive, powered up, and updated BIOS settings
(boot order, etc). I even booted to the Acronis CD to make sure the drive
letters were proper on the new drive. However, when Windows XP tried to boot
from the new drive, I encountered an error stated that the \system32\hall.dll
was corrupt or missing, halting the Windows boot before even the logo.
