I have an OEM license for Windows 2000 Professional that
came with my DEL. Now I want to do a major upgrade to my
box, replacing the main board and processor with 3rd party
alternatives. I assume that it will no longer look like a
DELL computer to the install disk. How do I get my OEM
license transferred to my new board and processor?
Thanks.

OEM licence is fixed to origonal sys ie not transferable - Dell may even
have tweaked it so that it will not install on non origonal sys.
Dell mobo's are specific to the Dell box, usually a third party mobo's will
not fit, even if they do the backplate connections will likely not.

Copy the Windows 2000 serial number so you can install it again.

If you can't find your serial number then look in

\My Computer\System Properties

for it.

You should be able to use any start up disk to boot the system. A
Win98 boot disk is suggested because it contains drivers for most cd
roms. Use the disk to FDISK the hard drive. Then after the necessary
reboot, FORMAT the hard drive. (again using the boot disk) The Dell
disk may have an OEM inf file the automates the Operating System
install. You should locate the folder on the CD disk that has the
Win2000 setup files and copy the folder to the C drive. Say for
example C:\setup. Then change to that directory and type setup or
setup.exe and hit the enter key. This should only run the Win2000
version of installing Windows and not the Dell version.

you are only upgrading the existing machine, there is no
need for a "transfer" try the install and see what happens -
do you have a recovery disk or win2K oem disk ?

A recovery disk might baulk a bit but the win2K disk should
happily work (assume that all hardware is 2000 compliant)

If you are using the same HD perhaps and "in place" install
will work

good luck
