Freddie

I recently took over the IT Admin job in a small company.
I inherited an old server which is unfortunately running
Windows 2000 Small Business Server instead of the standard
Windows 2000 Server. It is the default DC on a small
network of 10 workstations. I purchased a new server with
the intent of migrating all the server functions onto the
new server and retiring the old beast. I want to add the
new server to the domain as an additional Domain
Controller, then run DCPromo to upgrade the new machine to
the Primary Domain Controller. I would then run DCPromo
to demote the old server, then retire that machine from
service. I have tried running the Active Directory Wizard
to add the new Server to the domain. I get the following
error: "This product option is not available with the
Small Business Server Product of Windows". Can I somehow
copy the Active Directory files and promote the new server
off the network and then copy those AD files over. I
would disconnect the old server from the network and
reconnect the new one and reboot everything. Will that
option work or do I have to recreate all the existing
users and computers on the new server once i promote it to
the DC?

Hi Freddie-

Your options are to recreate all users and other objects, or to use a tool
like LDIFDE.EXE or CSVDE.EXE to export the users from the SBS DC and import
them into the Windows 2000 DC.

The article below's topic is related to Exchange, but the export and import
of user accounts is relevant in your situation. This can also help with
regards to the Contacts on your SBS machine:
