I am unable to import old messages from old computer running outlook to new
computer running Vista. I get error message " Messages canot be imported from
MAPI client" Can anyone tell me what this means please?

You can't directly import your Outlook .pst file.

On the old computer, export the data to Outlook Express format. Copy the
..dbx & .wab files to a temporary directory on the Vista computer. Open
Windows Mail, File - Import
Be careful to only navigate to the folder containing the .dbx files, don't
open that folder, or it won't find the files.

Or...
Install Outlook on the vista computer, and copy the .pst to it. Open
Windows Mail, and import.
Or, keep using Outlook, if it's 2003 or newer, because it's better than WM.

Hi,
My homecomputer crashed, but I have a .pst copy of all mails etc. So the
only possibility is to download Outlook and only that on my new laptob/Vista
(without XP on it). Where can I download it (and not have problems with my
Vista/IE7) for free. I need it only the time to import all these files into
Windows Mail.
Txs for helping me also out of this nightmare.

Ted Here,
Thanx, Dave! you (and someone else, here) gave me what I needed to
transfer my past OUTLOOK e-mails from my old, PC (in the "garage office) with
WinXP o/s to my new Sony Viao with only (WINDOWS VISTA) Windows Mail on it.
I did as someone (maybe you) in Exporting the OUTLOOK folders directly
into my OUTLOOK EXPRESS that was still on the same machine. Then, I
"COMPACTED ALL FOLDERS within the OUTLOOK EXPRESS menu. After that was done,
then, as You said, Dave, the .dbx files were created.
I had to locate those files. I finally did. I copied them onto a 2 gig
memory card. Then, I plugged that card into the laptop and copied those into
a temp directory that I created. Next, on the laptop. I opened up my WINDOWS
MAIL and selected to IMPORT from a OUTLOOK 6.0 (or something like that
number). Eventually I could direct the source to that temp folder I
made....like Dave sez....don't open it...just point to it. it WORKS! Thanx
Dave and all...Ted Ward....

Alan Here. I have been scanning various threads on this subject. What Ted
has written is a good summary of the process required so I thought I would
follow the same steps. I'm trying to get my outlook mail (on office 2000 -
yes 2000!!) onto my new Vista PC. I exported from outlook to express on the
old pc. Searched and found the .dbx files (was only expecting one). But I
could not find a .wab file.

Has anyone any ideas why?

I am trying to do the same thing, going from Outlook 2000 on my old XP
machine to Windows Mail on my new Vista computer. All the directions here
have been great but I have not been able to make it work yet.

As a test I imported my Sent Items folder from Outlook into Outlook Express
6.0 using the OE 6 import function. This seemed to go fine since I can now
open the file in Outlook Express and see all the messages.

Then I found the Outlook Express folder with the .dbx files and used the
Windows Start-Run function to open it. I copied the Sent Items.dbx file onto
a mini-USB drive and copied it into a new folder that I created on the
desktop of my new computer.

When I try to import the file into Windows Mail I keep on getting a message
that "No Messages can be found in this folder..." The path looks good and
I've tried it several times in several ways. And the .dbx file is definitely
in there!

I repeated the process after compacting the file and also tried different
naming conventions for the temp file. No luck so far. For some reason
Windows Mail Import does not seem to be recognizing the .dbx file as an
Outlook Express file.

Any ideas?

Never mind... I figured it out. Instead of trying to transfer just the one
file I copied the whole Outlook Express folder onto the USB drive. Windows
Mail then had no problem finding the files and I was allowed to choose the
ones that I wanted to transfer.

Make sure that .dbx file on your desktop does not have a 'Read Only' attribute.

Normal practice is to create a folder like "WinMail" on your desktop or in
Documents, then copy all the .dbx files there, including the key file 'folders.dbx'.
Point the importer to the parent folder "WinMail". For more help, see the
section "Importing from Outlook Express" here:

Hi

I've done what is suggested below ie import the message from Outlook to
Windows Mail, but it only allows you to import in Outlook format, and then
you can't see the messages in Windows Mail. Please help. I do need to use
Windows Mail for a separate account to Outlook so using Outlook is not a
solution. Thanks!
