I have tried to transfer files from an older computer with
windows 98 to a new computer using windows xp. I went
thru the porcedures of setting up both computers to
transfer thru a null modem cable (parallel). They
connected but I cannot get the files to transfer. Any
help?

try this

PC-to-PC Data Transfer using an Ethernet crossover cable.

There are many ways to connect two computers together in order to
transfer data from one PC to another. At King's this usually applies
when a new machine is to replace an old networked machine. It is
particularly required when the old PC has a very limited capability to
support external backup devices for file transfer to take place. Or if
the file size is significantly large.

This guide only focuses on using an Ethernet crossover cable to
transfer data from an old networked PC to a new PC that has a network
card. You must also have an Ethernet crossover cable, which you can
purchase very cheaply (i.e. a 3m cable costs £7.99 + VAT from Misco).
Or alternatively contact the SSS computing clinic.
This is a very quick, easy, and cheap, way to transfer data of
significant size.

need same workgroup and enable Client for MS networks and file and
printer sharing turn the firewall off on both pcs.

Works like a champ.
Make the files shareable or put them in a shareable folder or drive.
They show up under My network places.
