Hi All,

I am going to migrate our Windows 2000 DC to another hardware. The DC is
also running a DNS. the new hardware will have a new IP and the old DC will
be demoted to a member server and wil maintain it's IP address.

I have read the article http://support.microsoft.com/?id=280061. In step 8
of this article, it says

"Bring the current DNS server down and transfer its IP address to the
destination DNS server."

As mentioned earlier, the new server will have it's own IP and the old DC
will maintain it's own IP. If I do not follow this step 8, what are the
complications? All the other member servers' DNS settings are pointing to
another DNS server which belongs to the data center.

Thank you.

Well, that's the safe way. You just have to make sure that you leave the
OLD
DNS as a secondary until NO client is pointing to it.

Add the new server. Change all the clients. Make sure. Wait a day or two.
Bring down the old DNS server (as a DNS server or take it offline and see
what happens.)

Try Dean Wells, MVP's DNS Dump. Copy and paste the content to notepad,
rename it as a .CMD file. Type /? for syntax.

Dean Wells' DNSDump:
http://www.reskit.net/DNS/dnsdump.cm_

note: that's an underscore at the end of the URL.
