tranfer music files to video edit

I was trying to transfer music (that I had copied from a
cd to the hard drive )to a video editing program to use as
backgroung music for home video. Windows Media Player
stopped me from doing it. Message said "due to electronic
copyright agreements etc. etc."
Any suggestion of how I can do this?
