Hi All,

I am new to networking.
Want to know whether there is any utility/tool/manual way to check
whether :
1. Your PC is behind firewall and if yes which firewalls
2. Your PC is remotely tracked/accessed
3. Your internet conection is through proxy or direct

Please let me know.

Best Regards,
Synize.

1) To find out if you are behind a firewall, 1st you need to know what type
of internet connection you have eg. dial up / dsl. and how it gets to your
computer - pci card, usb modem, eithernet, nat / network router.
Next go to http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2 and click 'all service
ports'. If you are behind a firewall, the results should show up mostly
green.

2) To find out if your pc is being remotly tracked or hacked you will need
to know the basic concepts of a firewall, possibly a router and spyware. You
will then need to be able to use something like Zone Alarm and intrepret the
information it gives - eg. if zone alarm says xxx.exe is trying to connect
to the website gator.com then you will certainly know that you are being
tracked in some way. (Fyi - Gator is well known for their spyware products).
Another eg. is if there are a number of connections being reported in zone
alarm from a certain ip address. Once you know the concepts, you will be
able to know what zone alarm or a similar program are telling you.

3) Open the command prompt and type
ping www.google.com
and hit enter. If results come back from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx then you know its a
direct connection. If not, open internet explorer and check that you can
surf the net. If so then open the internet properties and on the connections
tab, look for the proxy settings.

Hope this helps,

Ray Taylor
