tracking and prevention of deleting files

I just had a problem with a "10" on the pucker scale.

I had an co-worker come over to me and show me our entire
project directory for 2003 was gone. I luckily had it on
back-up and restored it.

Now, how can I track actions taken by other users on the
network, or is there a way to prevent people from deleting
files/directories?? I'm pretty sure setting permissions
for READ-ONLY would be too much. Anyone have suggestions
to accomplish what I need??

Thank you, in advance, for any quick help I receive.

Sincerely,

Mark Matasovsky
