tower makes grinding noise when opening a file

when I try to open a file in Word, excel or powerpoint,
the tower makes a grinding noise. Sometimes it opens the
file and sometimes it does not. When it does not open I
must restart the computer & try again?

Sounds like a defective hard drive!
Have you run scanned the drive for errors recently?
