Totally Removing Norton!

Hi,

I used the Norton Uninstall Tool and the program seems to be gone. BUT when
I check with Windows Security Center it indicates that Norton is installed
and running! How do I totally get rid of it and what problems could this
lingering problem create with other ant-virus software I might install?

Hi Ian - Well, probably OK, AFAIK (I reference it in posts all the time),
but you might want to drop a line to the webmaster, MVP Brian A., here
first:

Norton is nowhere to be found.....but still shows up as "running" in the
Windows security center!
Also shows Norton firewall is installed. So basically it has apprpriated the
WSC function! Anyway to remove this pest from the WSC?

This is a suggested option, not a recommendation. I have used it to
successfully remove products that just won't uninstall properly:

1. Back up your registry first and/or Image your HD in case the registry
becomes corrupt. ERUNT is an excellent program for backing up the
registry. Make sure you understand how to restore your registry if your
system will not reboot, successfully.

2. Acquire a copy of jv 16 Power Tools 2006. It's very inexpensive.

3. After installing jv 16, use the software manager to uninstall all
Symantec software.

4. Run the Registry Cleaner and remove all traces of Symantec software.
If offered an option to back-up first, choose yes.

5. Run the Registry Finder and search for all instances of "Symantec"
and/or "Norton". Select all instances and choose remove. If offered an
option to back-up first, choose yes.

6. Search for all Symantec files and folders using Windows Search
Utility. Delete all items found.

Reboot your system. You should now find no traces whatsoever of any
Symantec Products.

A program known as regseeker can also be used for hunting symantec in the
registry, and it's free. :) Googling should locate you a copy.

You can also check on microsofts website for the registry keys concerning
which antivirus/firewall (if any) are installed and known to the security
center. I just don't remember the key offhand, or I'd just provide it.
