Total Recorder at Shutdown

After Total Recorder Standard Edition v5.3 is installed, XP shutdown always
suspends with a dialog box titled: End Program - TRd ww: C:\Program
Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe.

The dialog never does close, but clicking the End Now button will allow the
shutdown to continue. MSASCui.exe is version 1.1.1051.0.

After uninstalling Total Recorder, the problem disappears; but returns after
another install.

Turning off real-time protection in Defender also eliminates the problem. I
attempted to selectively deactivate some security agents, such as Windows
Add-ons and Application Execution, but the problem still occured.

Probably not relevent - the uphclean.exe service is used to avoid hangups in
the "Savings your settings" part of shutdown. This problem did not happen
with MS Antispyware.

Hello Hugh,

Please update to the new Version 1.1.1347.0 .

Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.

I hope this post is helpful.

Hi Еиçеl,

Thanks for pointing out a newer version of Defender was available. Over the
past maybe 15 reboots, that version is batting about about 930 -- just one
time the restart stalled with the End Program box.

Prior to that one reboot I had clicked open the Defender icon in the
notification area since it had a question mark on it. It was asking about an
Adobe patch I had just installed that made a change to a service -- I elected
"allow." (I have joined SpyNet with the "advanced" setting, and have all
notifications turned on.)

Thanks for the advice. I think this issue is resolved.

Thanks for the feedback, Hugh... Good to hear it helped you.

Hi All,

Upgrading to the latest version will indeed help, but there's still a
compatibility issue with Total Recorder when shutting down Windows Defender
UI. It looks to me like they're hooking the window at the top of the zorder
when they launch, which is apparently sometimes WD. We're investigating,
but I believe stopping the TotRecSched.exe process from autostarting will
work around this issue in the meantime.

Regards,
Joe

Hi Skip and Joe,

Since Skip asked, I have to admit that the new version 1347 did not
completely solve my problem, but given that Defender is still in beta I
really have no cause to complain. I have only tripped on the End Program box
3 times in the past week (in maybe 40 reboots). In two of those instances, I
had opened Defender to do something, and probably tried to restart soon after
leaving the controls. With earlier versions of the program, turning off
real-time protection eliminated the problem.

I noticed that Joe mentioned the Total Recorder scheduler. I do not use
that and do not allow it to start -- there is actually a switch in
TR/Options/Settings/System/Restrictions. I just checked my processes list
and so don't think it is running. Thus, it was probably not the culprit in
my earlier complaint or the cause of the rather infrequent problem now.
