Am thinking of using Excel for a database but will it hold 10,000 line
of data ??? 10,000 different data entries with name , address, city
state, phone, etc ???

What's the total number I can put into excel 97 ???

Thanks.....

You can have 65,536 different data entries, using one row for each entry,
and 256 different fields per entry.

Bob, 10,000 lines is well within Excel 97's capabilities. An Excel 97
worksheet can hold over 65,000 lines (65,536 in Excel 2003; I think it's the
same in 97).

You'll be able to enter the data, sort it, and filter it, as well as perform
calculations on it (of course). Eventually, if you intend to grow your
database and move from a flat file to a relational database system, you'll
want to think about negotiating the learning curve and migrating to Access.

10,000 rows is ok, but it's how many cells in total that matter also.
Then there are formats, formulas etc of these cells. Then, quite
important with 97, seems to be the Workbook size. Larger Workbooks seem
to be more prone to corruption and other problems.

As mentioned, Excel will still function using Auto Filters, Sorting,
Special Cells etc Perhaps even a Pivot Table as long as there are not
more than 8,000 items. see "Excel specifications and limits" for more.

If we are to assume that your database will grow, it's probably time to
think about Access and simply pulling in what is needed into Excel.
