We bought a Toshiba Sat 5205-S705 in the US in June 2003.

The shop specifically confirmed that it would work in the UK, but despite sending it off to the Toshiba UK Repair Centre, it is still not working and Toshiba UK is trying to avoid to give further assistance

Any advice on how to make the US tuner and/or tv tuning software work in the UK would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Hello

I have one question for you, how could Toshiba US confirm
that it would work if they are here in the US and have they tested
to make sure that it does work. I see why UK Toshiba is not
helping because they are saying that since you bought in US they
should help you correct,

Al

Well, to be honest, you should be able to configure the
unit to work in the UK. It is the difference between PAL
and NTSC format. It is to bad the company won't help you
set it up.

Don't listen to Al, he/she/it is stupid.

OK, we have a problem here....

TV tuners have to be different in each country because each country's tv
stations transmit on different frequencies. Tuning systems are either B/G,
D/K, I, M, N and L. In this case we have you in the UK which uses I and me
in the USA using M. So if there is some software for the tuner that asks
which system you want it to reset to, the answer in your case is I.

This is in ADDITION to the two countries (in this case US and UK) having
totally different systems - US = NTSC, UK = PAL.

Now we're running an additional problem.... This Satellite runs the MEDIA
CENTER edition of WindowsXP. This software is COUNTRY SPECIFIC. There is a
COMPLETELY different edition for the United Kingdom.

It is certainly capable of outputting a PAL signal to your TV... however
whether it is capable of receiving and tuning a PAL signal, I have no idea.

The specifications on the Toshiba website say:

Video-In NTSC (VHF/ UHF, CATV). Nothing about PAL. Did you contact Toshiba
while in the US to confirm it would be able to handle a PAL input signal?
(Never trust any salesperson in a store!)

MediaCenter Editions of XP have their own newsgroups and there may be
someone who has encountered a similar problem and be able assist better in
those newsgroups...

microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter

Meanwhile I'll see if I can find out anything else, but I have this feeling
you may be out of luck.

Hi Cari, Alvin and "anonymous"

Thank you all very much for your input. It's the first time I have used a discussion group forum, and I hadn't expected to get such quick response. It was encouraging and we still hope that there will be a way to get this problem resolved (without having to pay to much for it ...

Regarding Alvin's comment that it would be strange for Toshiba US to say the Media Center tv would work in the UK, it was not Toshiba US but the shop, i.e. the sales assistant that confirmed this. It was obvious - also to the sales assistant - that whether the Media Center tv would work in the UK, was a deciding factor for whether we'd buy it in the first place. If we'd been told the feature was country specific we would clearly have got a different laptop without the Media Center

But alas that will be very difficult to prove now so we have yet to contact the shop, hoping we can get it to work here in the UK by downloading some "compatibility software" or perhaps a free conversion from the US to the UK version

Thanks anyway for your help so far, and please let me know if you have any further advice

Best regards
Mariann

You were lied to. A US tuner uses NTSC; a UK tuner would used PAL/SECAM.
Hardware dependent, cannot be fixed without a swap of the tuner hardware.
