The CDROM on my Toshiba Techra 8000 Laptop has stopped functioning.
No Lights, tray won't open.
WIN98SE Device MGR, not showing CDROM. but do see PRI and SEC
IDE Hcontrollers and both are "WORKING PROPERLY". The internal HD is OK
too.

Does this mean the CDROM's Controller is OK and only the CDROM Module is
bad?

The CDROM stopped after "BAY LEVER IS OPEN" error message occurred
while power was applied.

Before I can order new parts I need to determine if the CDROM Module is
bad or if it's Controller is bad.

I have instructions how to remove and install CDROM MODULE in BAY.
But what can I do or learn without a spare CDROM Module?
Can I run Laptop with the BAY empty and learn if CDROM's controller is
OK?

Thank you for any help. Dave

It means that the cdrom drive has died.

Its almost certainly the cdrom drive thats died.

Nope, the only real way to be sure if its
the drive thats died is to try another drive.
