Hello, I have recently had an oppertunity to purchase a used A-70
laptop. The owner claims that there is a problem with the unit. He says
that it is shutting off intermittantly. He says it will be running
along fine and then nothing. Could this be a heat problem caused by a
bad fan, or a battery problem?. I cant really run it for to long as he
forgot to give me the power adapter and I dont know how much charge is
on the battery. When I have more details I will post them ,but for now
any input wuold be very helpful, thanks

That is possible, and easy to check by using speedfan to see
what the temperature gets up to just before the shutdown.
or a battery problem?.

It can certainly be due to that.

It can also be due to a dry joint or cracked trace etc too.

A dry joint or a cracked trace? what the hell are those? I am pretty
new to this stuff so please forgive my ignorance. Someone told me of a
program called Sandra. Does that monitor system procedures and
failures? What else does Fanspeed do? This laptop is in great shape
other than this problem, and the price is right $100.00 cdn. please
expand on your reply if you can. thanks again

A dry joint is a badly made soldered connection which hasnt
been soldered properly so doesnt conduct all the time.

The printed circuit board which is the colored thing all the
components on the motherboard are attached to has
connections between the components by traces, the
wire like things you can see. You can get a crack
in one so it doesnt conduct properly all the time.

The etc covers stuff like connectors that dont connect all
the time reliably and wires that are broken internally etc.
I am pretty new to this stuff so please forgive my ignorance.

monitor system procedures and failures?

Nope. It primarily lists what your system consists of
hardware wise and provides some extra speed data etc.
What else does Fanspeed do?

Its primary purpose is to control fan speeds, but does
provide a quick way of checking temperatures and it
provides access to the hard drive SMART data too.
This laptop is in great shape other than this problem,

Yeah, but its a very significant problem.
and the price is right $100.00 cdn.

Because it has that very significant problem.

He's likely tried to stop that happening and has given up.

Ask again if this attempt still leaves some unanswered questions.
I'm happy to keep trying for as long as it takes.

I have been on Google and checked out some reviews of this laptop , and
it seems that this model shutdowns because of a clogged heastsink on
the CPU as any other system should I would guess. I will clean the
heatsink and then run the Speedfan program that you have suggested and
see what happens. Hopefully that will give me some feedback towards a
solution. Thanks again Rod Speed for your time and efforts.
