After successfully running WXP, SP2 for several years now and bieng fully
current with Microsoft Update, I decided to try WMM 2.1 (2.1.4026) after
roxio EMC 8 gave audio sync problems.
Dell dimension 8100
P4 -- 1.7 GHz.
2 HD: 40 GB & 250 GB
3.8 GB DDR RAM (1.5 GB on system partition; 2.3 GB on 2nd HD separate paging
partition)
When I opened WMM, everything seemed fine, UNTIL I tried to access the
"Options" category under "Tools" and elsewhere in the GUI to configure temp
file locations, filters, etc. Every single time, the app hangs and has to be
closed via Taskmaster. I've come to the conclusion that the installation has
somehow been corrupted, even though WXP is giving no other signs of
instability 9never once a "Stop" or other serious error. I have run several
sfc.exe passes and several chkdsk passes, but that didn't help.

As WMM is wed irrevocably to SP2, is there any way to repair the WMM
component? I REALLY DON'T WANT TO DO A REINSTALL OR "REPAIR" the entire WXP
installation, which is performing flawlessly. I'm thinking about deleting
the WMM folder and then running sfc.exe. Would that work?

Alternatively, is there a solution on the Microsoft XP installation CD
including SP2? What file or group of files would need to be installed to
replace the faulty WMM installation?

PLEASE HELP. THIS LOOKS TO BE A WORTHWHILE PROGRAM IF I COULD ONLY
CONFIGURE IT!

Call it the "ghost in the machine" or whatever, I just went back to WMM after
fighting with it most of yesterday evening and just up to my post below
without success, and NOW THE OPTIONS APPLET WORKS! Sure would have saved me
and the forum time if it had shook off its stroke-like behavior a little
sooner.

At any rate, it's still an issue of technical interst to me to find out if
and how a problem of this nature -- repairing a component installed as part
of a larger installation (SP2) that is not found in "Add or Remove Programs"
-- can be resolved without a total reinstall.

Any suggestions or comments?

Thanks so much John. These are right on the money.

How did you access these, Google search? They look like very nice expert
sites.

I had reviewed and searched every MS site for SP2 and WMM without finding
anything about corrupt installations. You'd think they would have something
"official", especially since it looks like such a nice "freebie". Thanks
again and please let me know how you find such excellent references!

I find lots of things with Google and I always
save the links for future reference but I found
the articles in question in the Movie Maker
newsgroup.

In addition to searching Google for various
answers...you may also want to try Google
