I have the MSDE running on my own machine. The XPe tools will no longer
connect to the database. I recently updated to SP2 on my system (still
using SP1 tools). I reinstalled the tools and the data engine, but didn't
help. Anyone else have any issues with SP2 (firewall maybe)?

Thanks

Thanks for the links, but I they did not seem to apply (installed MSDE from
XPE disk, and did not have any personal certificates). Also, not sure what
you meant by using "DCM". I've since just uninstalled everything and tried
to start over. I now get the whole way to the end on installing the
database when I get an error: "Setup has detected that other applications
are currently using the component database...". I found some other posts
from you from 12/04 suggesting that the person should update WSH (tried
that), and MDAC (installer said that I did not need it, I'm guessing because
of SP2). So, it seems I've take a giant leap backwards.

Greg,

I am sorry. I meant CDM (Component Database Manager) not DCM.
Since you already uninstalled things it will be pointless to advise you with that error.

Anyway, when you uninstall XPe make sure you clean up \Windows Embedded Data directory (unless you want to back it up and save).

I deleted everything (after backing up) after I uninstalled everything, and
reinstalled to different directories, but it did not make a difference.
Maybe there is something lingering around in the registry that thinks it's
holding the database open. Still wondering if this new problem is somehow
related to my original problem.

Greg,

I doubt that is a left registry settings problem as they have nothing to do with the database and, especially, the database engine.
It must be something else. Although just in case you can clean up [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Embedded] and
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows Embedded] keys.

But most important that you clean up the \Windows Embedded Data directory.

Also, launch Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com and see if there are any application that holds a pointer to "a" database.
And disable Firewall.
Make also sure you turn off or uninstall any AV software on that dev machine.
