In XP you could set all Explorer Windows to a specific view setting by:
Tools - Folder Options - View "Apply to All Folders"; this button is
missing/been taken out in Vista. How do we achieve the same in Vista
(setting all Explorer Windows to same view) or is it in a different place?
Similarly there doesn't seem to be a "File Types" tab so that File
Associations can be edited in Folder Options - where is the GUI for this
now?
Pete Gomersall

OK, the "Apply to all folders" is now gone - every folder now automatically
sets these settings - you can chose the option "Remember each folders view
settings" (I think) which lets you customise each one.

Also, the File Types can be viewed in Control Panel > Programs > File
Associations :o)

Zack - thanks fro the comments:
This seems a real pain if you want every folder to be a same way; and this
happens to be different from the default - you have to configure each
separetely - that could be 1000's of separate settings to configure. What
were the usebility/UI designers thinking - how does this provide user
benefits. In fact what benefit is gained from removing the functionality the
"Apply to All Folders" button provided?
I would be interested in comments from designers at MSFT

As to > Also, the File Types can be viewed in Control Panel > Programs >

Associations :o)
This points back to "Folder Options" dialog - possible bug??

Thanks Andre
Like you I am not on Vista at moment.
Do you know what the rationale for removing the button was though? It seemed
like it was in a sensible position especially when the reset is still there.
Pete

I guess they wanted users to have more control over how they wanted their
folders to look. Just under the menu bar, you have a nice little tick box
display where you can add and remove things from the folder view itself -
the folder preview, the folder's list etc. Quite a nice little tool :o)

Hey Pete,

Just came out of Vista, the

For Apply to All Folders - go to View > select Customize View > Customize
(tab) > check > Apply layout to sub folders.
(Ignore this) I don't see it, I don't know if its because I don't get Glass
on my laptop, but I swear I saw this though, I even suggested. I am not work
today either, but I will check at the Office tomorrow.

The rationale, like Zack says, the menu bar gives you quicker access to to
customizing the view. I have bugged that its missing in Aero Express.

Andre Da Costa [Extended64] a écrit :
For Apply to All Folders - go to View > select Customize View > Customize
(tab) > check > Apply layout to sub folders. I don't remember the exact
because I am not on Vista right now.

For File Types:
You can now find it in Control Panel > Indexing & Search Options > Advanced

Well, that did not fully worked for me. In a folder, I've set "Details"
view, and removed "Keywords" column and added the Size one, then moved
Size just right to the "Name", and did the trick.
The first time, Explorer stopped working and Windows has restarted it
alone ;) The second time, the Size column still does not appear in
subfolders, but the Navigation Pane is back on business, even if I'm in
"X:\Folder1\Subfolder1", while before the trick, I was not able to have
the Navigation Pane if I was in any Subfolder.
I guess I'll have to continue to add myself the "Size" column, but to
have the Navigation Pane back is already a great thing, I was missing
it in subfolders!
Thanks for the trick!
