Wordpad is a very simple word processor. As such, it does not support word
count or spell checking. You'll need to install a more full featured word
processor to have these features available.
Many commercial programs to choose from such as MS Word (included in MS
Works packages, Office packages and as a standalone product).
There are also free alternatives available. A search on google for free
word processors will turn up many to choose from. Example of one hit
